Golf Course Maintenance Procedures
Verticutting
Utilizing a mechanical device with vertically rotating blades that cut into the turfs surface to remove excess thatch or leaves. The benefits of verticutting include increasing ball speed, allowing sunlight into the turf canopy, removing lateral growth, as well as allowing the top dress to penetrate the plant promoting health.
Aerification
The cultural process by which holes are punched into the turf to increase oxygen in the soil beneath the greens, fairways and teeing grounds. Core Cultivation provides several benefits, including thatch reduction, root stimulation, soil impaction, and organic matter dilution.
Foliar Fertilization
Foliar Fertilization refers to the application of liquid fertilizers to a plants leaves. This method can supplement soil nutrients and provide a boost of growth to the plant on a short term basis. These fertilizers are applied using a mobile spray rig.
Top Dress
The application of sand onto the greens, fairways and teeing grounds to help dilute any thatch left behind from the mowers and to assist in smoothing out the greens surface. This procedure will also help keep the greens and fairway surfaces firm and increase the roll of the ball. The amount of top dressing applied is dependent on numerous factors, the biggest being weather.
Ammonium Sulfate
Ammonium Sulfate is an inorganic salt with a number of uses. The most common use is as a soil fertilizer which is manually spread onto the grass. It contains 21% nitrogen which helps the grass green up quicker and reduce the soils pH levels.
Wetting Agent
Wetting agents fit into the class of chemical compounds called surfactants, which are chemicals that cause a physical change at the surface of liquids. There are four primary uses for these wetting agents; relieving localized dry spots, managing water, improving drainage and improving pesticide movement in the soil. In addition, superintendents use wetting agents for a variety of reasons such as reducing dew and frost formation, improving seed germination, reducing fairy ring damage, reducing soil compactions and improve irrigation efficiency.
